Fine Laconian (Region of Sparta) Aryballos with Strong Color

Circa First Half of the 6th Century BC

Description:  The shape of this vessel clearly derives from Corinth, but the style of the decoration is distinctly Laconian. The aryballos features a spherical body with rounded bottom. The handle is flat in sections, quite thick and extends from the shoulder to the lip. The vessel has a short cylindrical neck with slightly concave, broad, overhanging rim, making it ideal for holding or dispensing perfumed oils. The vessel is decorated in traditional Laconian style. Black glaze covers the aryballos, dark and rich on the lower portion while the top portion is so thin that brush marks are evident. The body is highlighted with a band of purple-red at the shoulder. A pair of beige colored bands encircle above and below. A thick band of purple-red highlights the otherwise black rim of the vessel. Very fine representative example of 6th Century BC pottery from the Greek region centered around Sparta.

Height:  2.75 in. (6.8 cm)

Condition:  The vessel is intact except for a repair to the rim. Nice surface with a few tiny chips.

Provenance:  Formerly in a private European collection.

Reference: See BOARDMAN (History of Greek Vases) pl. 67 for examples of the Laconian pottery excavated at Tocra. Also see HAYES(B) p. 66 for a Laconian aryballos in the collection of the Royal Ontario Museum.

Background: Athens and Corinth are the centers generally recognized for producing the finest ancient Greek pottery. The area of Laconia was greatly influenced by these two centers, as is apparent by the shape of this Corinthian-style vessel. The “spartan” decoration of the vase, however, affirms the reputation held by the Laconian potters for restraint and austerity.

Price: $ 2,300
