Reliquary Cross Depicting Jesus Christ Nailed to the CrossCirca 9th-11th Century AD
Description: Top half of a bronze reliquary cross (enkolpion) beautifully depicting Jesus Christ, nimbus at his head, as a full-length, unbearded figure with flowing robes decorated with a hatched and ribbon incising. His arms are spread apart and at each hand a large nail is depicted. Extremely fine and rare. Height: 3.25 in. (8.3 cm) Condition: Intact as shown with bottom loop missing. Superb smooth patina. Inscribed: Η C+CNH / KAJesus Christ conquers/is victorious Provenance: Formerly in the collection of the Boston scholar Carroll Wales, collected 1952-1970. Price: SOLD
