Large Legion VII Military Stamped Brick

Circa 1st-2nd Century AD    

Length: 12 in. (30.4 cm)
Height: 2 in. (5 cm)

Description: Large terracotta brick fragment with a complete legionary stamp reading “LEG VII CLA NT.” From Carnuntum, Lower Austria, in the province of Roman Pannonia. The stamp may be a reference to Ti. Claudius Claudianus who was a shortlived governor of Pannonia from 199-200 AD. The stamp is impressed within a rectangular frame with simple geometric decorations at either end. Legion VII was among the oldest units of the Roman army and were with Julius Caesar during the invasion of Gaul. A very sizeable example of the type with a complete and well impressed stamp.

Condition: Intact as shown.

Background: The Roman practice of stamping building bricks was common practice from early in the Republican period as a means of quality control as well as to prevent theft. Price: $ 1,500
