Roman Bronze Medical SpoonCirca 2nd-3th Century AD
Description: Roman bronze medical spoon with a long, round-section handle extending to a flat panel and bowl; a knob at the tip of the handle. The shallow bowl has a pouring lip to one side. Length: 4.7 in. (11.7 cm) Condition: Very fine condition, complete and intact. Provenance: Formerly a UK property, purchased from a central London dealer. Reference: See Surgical Instruments in Greek and Roman Times, by J.S. Milne, Plate XIX, figure 4, for a near identical example in the British Museum. Background: A nearly identical example was also found in the grave of a Roman surgeon found near Paris. Traces of medicament remain on it. It is thought that this instrument was used for warming salves and pouring them into the eye and other affected parts. Price: $ 600
