Fine Roman Silver Lion Figure

Circa 1st Century AD  

Description:   Solid cast lion with deeply modeled mane and facial features. The lion sits facing forward, head erect and front right paw extended slightly.  A very rare type.

Length:   1.25 in. (3.2 cm)      

Condition:  Extremely fine condition with superb detail.

Provenance:  Formerly with a UK collector who purchased it from a London auction house in the 1960s.

Background: The earliest staged spectacles in Rome of wild animals are the venationes given with lions and panthers in 186 BC by Marcus Fulvius Nobilior. In 55 BC Pompey displayed 600 lions along with many other animals; Julius Caesar features 400 lions in his quadruple triumph in 46 BC.
