New Catalogue XXX (Spring 2004) Mailed to Subscribers and Clients

(February 17, 2004)  Fragments of Time is pleased to announce the publication of Art from the Ancient World XXX, a full-color and authoritatively researched catalogue highlighting more than 60 provenanced ancient objects selected from our inventory.

The cover piece is a fine 6th Century BC pottery vessel from the East Greek region of Lydia.  The vessel stands 4.5 inches tall and was formerly in a New York collection prior to 1997.  It is elegantly decorated using a marbled reddish-yellow technique meant to simulate the look of beaten copper.  It is a distinctive type and extremely rare.  There are similar examples in the collections of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum.

"Prices for quality ancient objects have risen considerably in the past two years," said Fragments of Time founder John Ambrose.  "True to our mission we are striving in this catalogue to provide investment-quality objects at the best possible prices -- an exceedingly difficult challenge in the current market. While there is no way to predict the future, it would seem that the laws of supply and demand are driving up the prices of good antiquities."

Catalogue XXX features an especially rich selection of terracotta sculpture ranging from a group of Syrian fertility goddesses and an Old Babylonia Ishtar Plaque dating from the second millennium BC, to a wonderful standing Aphrodite, a reclining Etruscan 'banqueter,' several classical Greek figures and a Canosan swan.  There is also a wonderful Hellenistic boy depicted with his writing tablet on his lap -- three Greek letters visible.

There is also a fine selection of pottery including an over-sized red-figure Etruscan bell krater with a complex Dionysiac scene featuring the god, satyrs and attendants on the front. Several Corinthian, Cypriot, South Italian and Roman vessels are highlighted in several price ranges.

Not to be overlooked are a selection of fine metal objects including: an important Gold Hellenistic earring which featured in a 1977 exhibition at the Hamburg, Germany, museum and was published in the accompanying catalogue; a wonderful bronze statuette of Mars Ultor circa 2nd Century AD; a superb bronze applique in the shape of a horse head; and a selection of fine Roman brooches.

Fragments of Time quarterly catalogues are consistently rated among the best in the antiquities field and are used by collectors, scholars and museums as reference works. A complimentary catalogue is available upon request for new clients by filling out our request form online or by calling (508) 359-0090.
