Terracotta Canosan Swan

Circa Early 3rd Century BC

Description: Charming Canosan solid terracotta swan with much original red and yellow pigment remaining over white slip.  Wings and beak are delineated in bright surviving color. Remains of a decorative ribbon in red on the head and neck. There is an attachment hole on the underside indicating the bird likely once perched atop one of the ornately decorated vases for which ancient Canosa is noted.  Very attractive and pleasing. 

Height:  3.25 in. (7.5 cm)

Condition:  Intact with minor age fissure to the back.  Solid and attractive. 

Provenance: Formerly a German property, acquired prior to 2000.
