Terracotta Lion Aryballos from Rhodes
Circa 560-550 BC
Description: Rhodian terracotta aryballos in the form of the head of a roaring female lion. The features of the lion’s face, softened over time, are still evident with wide-spread eyes, broad flat nose, squared muzzle with dramatic pointed teeth and protruding tongue and whiskers indicated. Atop the creature’s head is the pouring aperture with raised collar set between two perked rounded ears. Skillfully crafted from finely grained micaceous orange clay. Alluring example of the coroplastics of ancient Rhodes.
Height: 3 in. (7.6 cm)
Condition: A few surface chips and an area from the rear left side of the face missing. Thin layer of encrustation overall. Custom wood block display stand.
Provenance: Formerly in a European private collection. Also ex: Erlenmeyer Foundation, an important Swiss collection.
Background:
Perfume bottles, such as this example, were the primary output of the Rhodian terracotta industry from about 600-540 BC. Animal heads were a popular subject as well as female busts and helmeted male
heads.
