Rare Pair of Bronze Cranes on Pedestals

Circa 2nd-3rd Century AD

Description:  Extremely rare pair of carefully detailed bronze cranes with heads in the air standing upon spool-shaped bases. Each is elegantly rendered with long slender bodies, wings at their sides standing on two long slender legs with spread toes in the shape of a cross meeting in the center. Their slender necks are curved with heads turned upward with long pointed beaks in the air. Each is detailed with large eyes and replete with short feathers all rendered in incision. Item a) has dark black-brown patina while item b) has a lighter emerald green patina. Both clearly made in the same workshop.

Height:  5.5 to 5.6 in. (13.6-14 cm)

Condition:  Both intact and fine. Crane on right professionally reattached to its base and very tip of beak missing.

Provenance:  The pair was formerly a German property.

Background:  In ancient Rome, cranes were often associated with war, sometimes depicted with Mars and Victory. This association most likely came from Celtic traditions. Examples of cranes on helmets and shields have been found in Gaulish locations.

Price:  $ 4,200 for the pair
