Fine Plate Fragment with 'Tree of Life'

Circa 340-400

Description:  Fragment from large, fine Roman polygonal red slip ware plate with a crisply modeled "tree of Life' motif. The tree has symmetrical branches. The 'Tree of Life' motif appears on so-called Martyr Plates that depict Christian martyrs in the arena.  Mounted on a museum-quality, removable custom stand.

Width:  3.8 in (10cm) at its widest point.

Condition:  Intact and crisp as shown.  The top of tree was slightly smudged in antiquity while the clay was wet and the remains of a thumb print survive.

Provenance:  Formerly in a Texas collection, acquired in 1989. Said to have been found in Bath, England.

Reference:  See Spatantike zwischen Heidentum und Christentum, #180, for a complete Martyr Plate with a Tree of Life.
