New View of Ancient Rome: Water, Water Everywhere!

Prominent American environmental archaeologist Albert Ammerman may be leading the way to the discovery of several major Roman temples by re-thinking the layout of the ancient city.

According to the London Times, Ammerman is advancing his theory that, unlike contemporary Rome, the ancient city was more akin to Venice with wide waterways from the Tiber that ebbed and flowed depending upon the season.  By following the surmised banks of the ancient Tiber, Ammerman believes that he has begun to pinpoint under a modern police station what may be either the Temple of Minerva or, more significantly, the Temple of the Deified Augustus.

He maintains that a broader, wider Tiber River would have given the city a completely different personality from the Rome we know today.  The ancient visitor would have been awed by a long row of impressive stone temples seemingly rising out of the water.
