Tree of Life Limestone Applique Mould

Circa 4th-5th Century AD    

Description:  Thick limestone mould for stamping North African redware appliques in the form of a tall leafy tree (as opposed to the more usual Palm Tree), most likely representing the Tree of Life.  

Height:  2.0" x 2.5" x 1.5" 1.25 in. (52 x 62 x 32 cm)

Condition:  Excellent.

Provenance: Formerly a German property.

Reference:  See Spatantike zwischen Heidentum und Christentum, by Jochen Garbsch and Bernhard Overbeck, #50-52, for fragments of leafy trees associated to the Genesis story of Adam and Eve.
