Attic Stamped Amphoriskos

Circa 425-400 BC

Description:  A lovely thin-walled black-glazed amphora in miniature with elegant stamped designs.  A row of upright palmettes encircle the upper body at its broadest point, while another row of inverted palmettes on the tapered portion of the body mirrors the top.  Between these bands are three distinctive grooves encircling the center of the vessel.  The flat shoulder bears a band of miniature palmettes interrupted on either side by two daintily curved handles smoothed into a narrow neck with thin flat overhanging rim.  The vessel stands on a dainty three-tiered foot.  The lustrous black glaze has been thinly applied rendering a somewhat mottled appearance where the pinkish-orange color of the clay is revealed.  A rare and elegant shape on the Attic repertoire.

Height: 3.6 in. (9 cm)

Condition:  Intact with minor surface wear around the rim.  Affixed to a small plexiglass stand.

Provenance:  Formerly a British property.  Also ex:  private collection formed in the 1950-60s.

Reference:  See Greek and Italian Black-Gloss Wares and Related Wares in the Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto 1984) by John W. Hayes, no. 40 for the type from Athens.  Also see In the Shadow of the Acropolis: Popular and Private Art in the 4th Century Athens (Boston/Utah 1990) by John J. Herrmann, Jr., no. 39.

Price: $ 2,900
