Bronze Inscribed Handle

Circa 1st Century AD

Description:  Bronze handle with Latin inscription that would have been attached to either a cooking pan or patera.  The end of the handle has a large flat ring with two encircling lines in raised relief accenting the inner and outer edges, just before the tapered handle begins.  The surface bears the inscription "A.RATVSV".  The handle begins to taper as it extends to where it would have been attached to the rest of the pan and is incised with three small circles and a single line along each edge.  The back is left smooth.  Custom wood block stand.

Length:  3.25 in. (8.2 cm)

Condition:  Intact as shown with smooth green-brown patina.

Provenance:  Formerly a British property.

Published:  On p. 4 (CA) in Greek and Roman Inscriptions in North America (1997) by John Bodel and Stephen Tracy.

Reference:  See Ancient Rome (BM/Eyewitness Books 1990) by Simon James, p. 45 for a bronze pan with a similar handle also inscribed.

Price:  $ 475
