Bronze Mastiff PuppyCirca 3rd Century AD
Description: Cute solid cast bronze puppy of the Mastiff type. The puppy sits upright on his hind haunches with slightly exaggerated front paws drawn close to its chest and back legs. The round face is cursorily rendered with large diamond-shaped eyes, squat upturned muzzle with closed mouth and two short ears held close against the creature's head. He sits in an integral squared base. Dark smooth patina. Charming example of one of the most popular animals in Roman art. Height: 1.75 in. (4.2 cm) Condition: Intact. Provenance: Formerly in the Leo Mildenberg Collection of Animals in Ancient Art. Said to have been found in England. Background: Dogs were commonly found among Roman funerary statuettes and may represent a pet of the deceased or may be linked to a healing goddess.
