Bronze Ornamental Vessel FootCirca 1st Century AD
Description: A delightful rendering in solid cast bonze of a foot from a vessel in the form of an erote. The chubby figure leans forward with his left arm in the air and hand curled to fit a now missing implement, and his right arm at his side. His face is rendered with eyes, brows, wide nose and full lips framed by chin-length loose curls. The erote is surmounted upon a feline claw and leg that envelopes his lower torso in a petal-like appearance. The paw is strongly modeled with toes with large claws. The back side is simply detailed with remnants of a lug that would have been a point of attachment. Height: 3 in. (7.3 cm) Condition: Intact as shown with smooth dark green patina. Custom wood block stand. Provenance: Formerly a British property. Reference: See Greek, Roman and Related Metalware in the Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto 1984) by John W. Hayes, no. 276 for the type. Also see Les Bronze Antiques de Paris (Museée Carnavalet 1989), p. 427 for a plate from the Vincelle Historical Library in Paris illustrating a similar ornamental foot with erote. Price: $ 675
