Bronze Phallic Chest HaspsCirca 1st-3rd Century AD
Description: Two bronze chest hasps in the form of phallic herms. Each has a youthful male bust with sort parted hair, round faces with impressed features and bare torsos. The shaft of each is decorated and adorned with male genitalia, and both terminate with a pierced square catch protruding from the back. Item a) is nearly plain on the shaft with the exception of a band of zigzags at the top and decorative mouldings at the terminal. Item b) is decorated with floral or vine-like patterns down the front with four decorative mouldings at the base. Custom mounted on a wood stand. Height: a): 2.2 in. (5.5 cm) b): 4 in. (10.5 cm) Condition: Both are intact with smooth dark patina. Provenance: Item a): was formerly in a private British collection. Item b): was formerly a German property. Price: $ 475 b): $ 950
