Carnelian Intaglio

Circa 1st-2nd Century AD  

Description:   Lustrous orange-red carnelian intaglio with sharp realistically rendered portrait of a young victorious athlete in profile with a laurel wreath around his head. Neatly cropped hair of the Roman style indicated with etched strokes. His eyes look forward, and he has a straight nose, rounded chin and full slightly parted lips.

Height:  0.6 in. (1.5 cm)

Condition:  Intact and superb!  Nice, even shape -- could be easily mounted in jewelery.

Provenance:  The intaglio was formerly a German property.
