New Catalogue XXVII Mailed to Subscribers and Clients
Fragments of Time is
pleased to announce the publication of Art from the Ancient World XXVII,
a full-color and authoritatively researched catalogue highlighting more than 75
provenanced ancient objects from our inventory.
The cover of this milestone catalogue features an important and vigorous Roman terracotta theatrical mask dating to the 1st/2nd Century AD. The mask is boldly modeled with "megaphone" style mouth and tight curled locks framing the face. The mask was formerly in the collection of a British educational institution which acquired it sometime between 1874 and 1940. In addition to the mask, the catalogue features an range of impressive Roman objects including a marble altar with an inscription in Latin reading IOVI MAXIMO CAPITOLI NOSACRUM, which translates to "To Jupiter, best and greatest of the capital, sacred to us." Also featured is a rare large redware four-handled pythos, a glass double balsamarium (formerly in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts), a small selection of fine gems, and an assorted variety of glass and lamps. "We've expanded the number of objects in this catalogue by more than 30%," said founder John Ambrose. "This allows us to provide an interesting mix of objects across many Mediterranean cultures and time periods." The catalogue features a selection of Near Eastern objects ranging from a Tel Halaf figure dating to 5000-4000 BC to a wonderful chalcedony duck seal dating to roughly 500 BC. For Egyptian collectors, the catalogue features a diverse group of Egyptian scarabs of exquisite quality, most coming from a private Texas collection. There is also a wonderful 12th Dynasty translucent alabaster jar -- priced at only $950! -- from the same educational institution as the cover piece. There are more than 20 objects featured representing the heavily Greek-influenced cultures of Cyprus, Etruria, Italy and the Eastern Mediterranean. Worth special note are a black-on-red Cypriot juglet originally in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum until 1925 (sold with a copy of the original receipt!); an imposing and rare Samnite impasto multi-unit vessel; a selection of fine Greek drinking vessels; and an Etruscan spouted jar decorated in the rare "Six's technique". Fragments of Time quarterly catalogues are consistently rated among the best in the antiquities field and are used by collectors, scholars and museums as reference works.
