Egypto-Phoenician Addorsed Bulls Amulet

Circa 3rd-1st Century BC

Description:  White steatite amulet depicting two finely detailed addorsed bulls.  The amulet illustrates only the bulls' heads and foreparts with front legs tucked beneath their chests.  Lively faces are detailed with horns, an etched triangle on the forehead, tiny ears pressed against the head, incised eyes and broad muzzle.  The bodies are covered with cross-hatching.  A full moon within an upward pointing crescent moon rests atop the animals' backs and is pierced for suspension lengthwise through the top of the crescent.

Length:  0.7 in. (2 cm)

Condition:  Intact.

Provenance:  Formerly in an East Coast, USA private collection.

Reference:  See Amulets of Ancient Egypt (UK 1994) by Carol Andrews, no. 91b and p. 90 for the type and discussion.

Background:  Though the significance of this amulet is uncertain, it is speculated that
the moon would associate the wearer to lunar regenerative powers.

Price:  $ 400
