Elegant Glass Cosmetic Flask

Circa 1st Century AD

Description:  Pale green-blue cosmetic bottle with teardrop-shaped body about three-fifths of total height. Broad tubular neck with folded-over rim flattened at an angle. The neck is tooled at the bottom, offsetting it from the body. Flattened underside with a deeper blue hue to the glass. Small amount of blue and purple iridescence outside and creamy crust within the bottle.

Height:  5.3 in. (13.4 cm)

Condition:  Intact with collector's tag adhered to the underside obscuring a possible pontil mark.

Provenance:  Formerly in the Gyorgy Kepes Collection (1906-2001), an internationally known painter, sculptor and photographer. Also, the founder of M.I.T.'s Center for Advanced Visual Studies.

Reference:  See Roman and Pre-Roman Glass in the Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto 1975) by John W. Hayes, no. 242 for a nearly identical bottle.
