Latest Elgin Marbles Developments

The latest installment in the Elgin Marbles saga has seen Mr. Neil MacGregor, director of the British Museum meet Evangelos Venizelos, Greek Minister of Culture,  for the first time in the history of the 'three decade long cultural cold war.' Yet it has done nothing to alter the museum's strong stance on the marbles never leaving England, for any period of time. Any suggestion they would was described by one museum spokesperson as 'total nonsense.'

The Greek contingency has made considerable concessions to their demands this time around; including dropping any mention of repatriation or final return of the marbles. "The legal question of ownership of the Parthenon marbles is no longer important to us," Said Eleni Kourka from the Greek Cultural Ministry.

The aim is to now try and arrange a short term loan in time for the 2004 Greek Olympic Games and the opening of the new $100-million Acropolis Museum (which has itself caused concern - experts contending its 'construction will destroy unique archaeological finds on the site') where a space is being specifically built for the Elgin Marbles despite the minute chance of them ever residing there. In an attempt to try and soften opposition the Greeks have offered England access to their enormous inventory of objects which would be available on a rolling loan scheme. The British Museum was not tempted.

Also a first in the history of the dispute Mr. Venizelos has gone 'over Mr. MacGregor's head', appealing directly to British Prime Minister Tony Blair believing that now a letter has been delivered to the UK Ministry of Culture, Tony Blair must 'have a position on the subject.'
