Face of Ancient Londoner Revealed

From the UK comes word that scientists working from the remains of a remarkably preserved 4th Century AD female burial discovered late last year in London (and reported by Fragments of Time) have unveiled a first-ever 3-D likeness of an ancient Londoner.

Scientists also revealed that measuring lead levels suggests the woman, believed to have been in her twenties when she died around 350 AD, was probably not born in London, but Spain, and was probably not Roman or Romano-British, but Celtic.

Working from the well-preserved skull found in the grave, scientists created a life-like wax resin model of the woman's head and face. The model revealed a young lady with slightly rounded face and dark brown hair braided about her head. She had close, brown eyes and medium-toned skin, suggestive of her Mediterranean origin. The model provides a unique glimpse of what this woman of wealth may have looked like 1650 years ago.

A color photo was recently published in the January 11 issue of the UK Telegraph (www.telegraph.co.uk) along with a more detailed article. Register for free access to the Telegraph and search the Jan/11/2000 issue.
