Glass Juglet Pendants

Circa 4th-5th Century AD  

 

Description:   Two crumb-decorated dark glass pendant beads in the form of single-handled juglets. The shapes vary from a wide-mouthed high-footed jug to a strap-handled round-bottom juglet. Each vessel is ornamented with 'crumbs' of yellow, green, red, orange and white.

Avg. Height:  0.9 in. (2.2 cm)

Condition:  Intact.

Provenance:  Formerly in an East Coast private collection.

Reference: See Ancient Glass in the Israel Museum: Beads and Other Small Objects (Jerusalem 2001) by Maud Spaer, pl. 28 for several examples of the type.

Background: Such pendants are thought to have been worn as amuletic representations of eternal drink.
