Massive Exhibit Sheds Light on Etruscans

A major international exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, Italy, through July 2001, brings together more than 700 Etruscan antiquities from 13 countries in a stunning visual survey of Etruscan culture and art, according to the International Herald Tribune.

The Etruscans, an ancient culture indigenous to central and northern Italy, was a powerful society noted for its fondness for and robust trade with the Greeks of the 5th Century BC. Despite its great art, including sophisticated goldworking virtually unparalleled in the ancient world, the Etruscans left no significant written history or literature. By the time of the emperor Augustus, Etruscan culture and language were beginning to fade and were eventually absorbed by the spread of the Roman empire.
