Obituary: Herbert A. Cahn, 87, A Gentleman and a Scholar
It is with great regret that we report the passing of Herbert A. Cahn on April 5, 2002. Mr. Cahn, was born January 28, 1915 in Frankfurt, Germany, where he began his studies in archaeology, ancient history and philology before moving permanently to
Basel, Switzerland, in 1933.
He founded, along with his brother Erich, a coin dealership in Basle in 1933 and completed his doctorate in 1940. He became a part-time lecturer at the University of Heidelberg in 1965, and professor emeritus in 1971.
Mr.
Cahn pursued a lifelong passion for both ancient art and ancient coinage to the very end of his life. Just a few days prior to his death, he was busy with his son Jean-David Cahn reviewing photographs from a forthcoming auction.
In addition to his keen
eye and encyclopedic expertise, he will be remembered as a true gentleman and impeccable ambassador for the antiquities community who was always ready to share his enthusiasm for the classical world.
