Hellenistic Bronze Aphrodite FixtureCirca 2nd-1st Century BC
Description: Classical fragmentary bronze figure of Aphrodite. She stands looking down to her left with her left arm bent upward with her hand on her chest. She has rounded shoulders, small breasts, a rounded belly and full hips. The legs are now missing below the knees and the right arm is missing below the elbow. Her classically beautiful face is rendered with soft contours, wide eyes, dominant nose and full lips. Framing her face is the highly recognizable hairstyle associated with Aphrodite, consisting of a bow-knot on top of her head and tightly curled bun at the nape of her neck. The reverse side of the statuette is hollowed indicating it may have once adorned a larger item such as a bronze vessel or piece of furniture. Height: 2.75 in. (7 cm) Condition: Intact as shown with smooth dark patina of black and brown. Custom mounted. Provenance: Formerly in the Wilhelm Horn Collection (1870-1959), Berlin. Wilhelm and his wife, Anna Inkelmann, acquired most of their collection between 1926-1938 through extensive travel, primarily to Egypt, and had many ties with the antiquities and archaeological community.
