Inscribed Bronze 'Bread Stamp'

Circa 1st Century AD

Description:  Sturdy bronze bread stamp with two lines of inscription in relief. The stamp is shaped as a rectangle with rounded corners with a large thick rounded handle on the back. The actual stamp is enclosed within a raised border with two rows of inscription in mirror image:
M. COCCEI / PROCVLI. The use of these stamps is still uncertain as there have been no corresponding stamped artifacts, and they do not belong to the occultist stamps used to mark salves and medication. In all likelihood, these stamps marked organic or perishable goods that would not have survived from antiquity.

Length:  3.2 in. (7.8 cm)

Condition: Intact.

Provenance:  The stamp was formerly a German property.

Reference:  See Les Bronzes Antiques de Paris (Musée
Carnavalet 1989) pgs. 305-311 for the type.
