Ancient Sacred Landscape Conference (June)A two day conference exploring the significance, sustainability and sacredness of Ancient Sacred Landscapes will be held June 17-18, at Bodicote Park, Banbury, Oxfordshire.
Bodicote Park is a modern venue with a large theatre room, bar, full disabled access and ample parking. Morning coffee and afternoon tea is included. Lunches will be available (including vegatarian) from £3.00.
Speakers to reflect all interest groups:
Gill Swanton - "Avebury. Place and Space" Gill is in a fairly unique position being both a farmer and landowner residing in Avebury and an archaeologist. She is also on the World Heritage Site Steering Group and co-chair of the Archaeological and Historical Group for Avebury. Her other positions include being a member of Wessex Archaeology, a Trustee of the Prehistoric Society and a part-time tutor based at the Centre for Historic Environment at Bristol University amongst others. The farm has provided a research base for archaeologists for over 40 years.
David Miles - Head of Archaeology, English Heritage. David will also be leading the site visit to Uffington White Horse where he has been responsible for much of the archaeological and historical research.
George Lambrick - Director of the Council for British Archaeology and Chairman of the Rollright Trust. George was also responsible for the most recent archaeological research at the Rollright Stones and will lead the site visit there.
David Thackeray - Head Archaeologist, National Trust. A National Trust representative will lead the site visit to Waylands Smithy.
Prudence Jones - Author and Historian, with a special interest in Pagan Europe and the modern pagan interest in ancient monuments.
Philip Heselton - Earth Mysteries Researcher and Author.
Rev, Richard Thomas - Communication Officer for the Diocese of Oxford. Richard will be talking about The Sacredness of Landscape.
Cassandra Latham - Village Witch involved in the protection of Cornwall's ancient sites.
DAY TWO: Sunday 18th June
Visits in the company of archaeologists and local experts to the Rollright Stones, Waylands Smithy and the Uffington White Horse.
A chance to learn about the sites and look at issues such as vandalism, erosion and site management. It is planned that there will also be a chance to learn practical tips on dealing with physical damage.
Plus a performance of The Tempest at the Rollright Stone Circle on both Saturday and Sunday Evenings.
Ticket prices: Day One of Conference: £10.00 (in advance); Both Days: £15.00 in advance. Tickets on the days, if available, will be £10 for each day. Play: £7 in advance (£5 concessions). Tickets on the night, if available, will be £8.50.
