Lapis-lazuli Scaraboid, ex. Mildenberg CollectionCirca 7th-4th Century BC
Description: Description: Charming lapis-lazuli scaraboid with hawk's head. The bird's head projects from the beetle's thorax and has eyes and short hooked beak rendered in low relief. The body is of typical scarab form with wing case and legs delineated. Underside is deeply incised to create a naturalistic appearance. Smooth uniform royal blue surface with crisp detail. Lapis-lazuli is presumed to have been brought into Egypt from northeastern Afghanistan. Though the stone was used in Predynastic times, it was less commonly utilized for engraving. Scarabs and amulets in lapis enjoy periods of popularity, however, throughout Dynastic Egypt, including the 26th Dynasty, such as this example. Length: 0.5 in. (1.3 cm) Condition: Intact with smooth surface and deep color. Provenance: Formerly in the Leo Mildenberg Collection of Animals in Ancient Art. Price: $ 700
