Pharonic Map Points Way to Massive Gold Reserves

An Egyptian gold miner who has spent half his life in Australia's gold mines, has used an ancient map to what may be massive gold reserves in the Egyptian Eastern desert.

According to the Times of London, Sami Raghy was so intrigued by an ancient Egyptian map showing mines that provided gold for famous Pharaonic treasures that he spent the next 10 years searching. Now, he believes he has pinpointed an area with proven gold reserves of 1.66 million ounces and an additional 16 million in unproven reserves.

If extracted, the reserves would catapult Egypt into one of the world's top 10 gold producers.

The papyrus map that guided the discoveries was found at Luxor in 1820 and is thought to be the earliest surviving geological. It is on display in the Turin Museum and depicts tunnels once used to mine Pharaonic gold.
