Native Italian Ornate Bichrome JugCirca 5th-4th Century BC
Description: A Daunian round-bodied pottery jug of ornate style with geometric designs in red and brown over buff-colored slip. The overall shape is pleasing with a deep-bowled round body, flat bottom, flat splayed rim and high wide handle accented with two symmetrical spurs at the front. The body is accented with concentric encircling bands in red and brown with a frieze of dotted loops just below the mid-point of the body. The rim of the vessel is decorated with concentric bands and one dotted band. The handle is decorated with an eye-catching pattern of diamonds, cross-hatching and rectangles all applied in brown. Attractive example of a shape typical to the time but with a highly individualized touch. Height to Handle: 7 in. (17.5 cm) Condition: The handle and one spur have been reattached. A stable hairline fissure in the rim. Provenance: Formerly a German property, acquired prior to 2002. A collector's tag affixed to the underside: 12.
