"Rabbit and Young" Brooches

Circa 1st Century AD

Description:  Three bronze enameled brooches in the form of a rabbit and her young. In all three, the mother id in profile facing right with oval-shaped torso, bent front and back paws, long pointed ears and circular incised eye. The silhouettes of the young are impressed within the mother's torso, facing each other and divided by a saltire ('X'). Red enamel is still visible on item a) while the enamel of the other two is now missing due to erosion over time. All three are complete with hinged pin and catchplate. Lovely examples of an uncommon type.

Average Length:  0.8 in. (2.3 cm)

Condition: All three are intact with smooth dark patina.

Provenance:  All three were formerly a German property.

Reference:  See Ancient Brooches and Other Artefacts (UK 1989) by Richard Hattatt nos. 1632 and 1633 for the type in the collection of the author.

Background: It is believed that this type of brooch was imported from Gaul as little variation exists between the known examples, and according to Richard Hattatt, may have all been made from the same original mold.

Price:  a): and b): $ 250 each
            c):
