Redware Fragment of Running Lion

Circa 3rd-5th Century AD

Description:  Redware fragment from a large circular plate with grooved rim decorated with a lion pouncing to the right. The lion appears frequently in the Early Christian genre as a symbol of martyrdom.  

Length:  2.7 in. (6.1 cm)

Condition:  Intact as shown.

Provenance:  Formerly a German property.

Reference:  See Spatantile zwischen Heidentum und Christentum, p. 135, for an example of pouncing lions and the tomb of Lazarus decorating a plate.
