Lovely Chous with Lady of Fashion

Circa 4th Century BC

Description:  Red-figure trefoil lip chous depicting a lady of fashion. Her face is rendered in a solemn manner with neatly drawn eye, furrowed brow, prominent nose and lips pursed in a slight frown. She wears a starkly decorated kekryphalos with thick curly hair revealed along her hairline. The head is framed by simplified palmettes with modified leaves behind her. The scene is framed by a simple reserved border, the top edge of which has eight dots applied in black. Covered in thick lustrous black glaze. Delicate curved handle runs from the lip to the shoulder. Small ring base, partially reserved beneath.

Height: 4.25 in (10.2 cm)

Condition:  Break at the handle neatly repaired.

Provenance:  Formerly in the collection of Imre and Nicholas T. Molnar, acquired between 1960-1978. Also, by descent to a private American collector.

Reference:  See TRENDALL pl. 239 no. 9 and pl. 252 no. 11 for similar plain-style red-figure choes from Sicily.

Price: $ 1,400
