Ephedrismos Group - Rare Type

Circa Late 4th-Early 3rd Century BC

Description: Large dramatic terracotta statuette depicting female figure and an erote. It appears they have just finished a game of ephedrismos, and the erote is the victor. The female stands in a long, flowing garment with her head turned to her right, hair pulled back into a knot. The erote is naked except for a cloak draped over one leg. The erote has outstretched wings. One arm is raised and probably once held a ball in the now missing hand.

Height: 12 inches! (30 cm)

Condition: Professionally repaired.

Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Professor and Mrs. Sid Port, West Coast, USA

Reference: This subject first appears in Attic red-figure and continues throughout the Hellenistic period. Scholars believe it represents the game of throwing a ball at a stone in an attempt to overturn it. The player who fails to do so loses, and runs to touch the stone while carrying the winner on her back.
