Late Roman/Early Byzantine Bronze Crosses

Circa 7th-8th Century AD

Description:  Three wonderful, and wearable early Christian artifacts. Item a) is in the form of a cross with four equally sized arms each terminating in a suspension loop and was likely used as a pendant attachment for a lamp or other liturgical object; item b) is a pendant cross with flared arms decorated with a punched dot; and item c) is a pendant cross with ornate incised geometric design.  Lovely patina on each.

Length: 1.2-1.4 in (3.0-3.4 cm)

Condition:  All are intact.

Provenance: All were formerly a German property.

Reference:  See Early Christian and Byzantine Art, by Richard Temple, no. 63 for related types.

Background: These small containers secured a chord embedded in wax to protect documents from tampering during delivery.
