Two Sumerian Cylinder SealsCirca 3100-2900 Century BC
Description: Two hardstone Sumerian cylinder seals from the Jemdet Nasr period that would have been used in trade. Item a) is made from semi-translucent banded quartz, deeply incised with three rows of stylized fish. Item b) is carved from beige calcite with ornate design of concentric ovals. Both centrally pierced and strong crisp designs. FOT Inv: 205.0089b/205.0089c. Height: a): 0.5 in. (1.3 cm) b): 0.3 in. (0.9 cm) Condition: Both intact. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Dr. Edward D. Fries, a world renowned cardiologist who made great strides in understanding and treating blood pressure. Dr. Fries was an avid art enthusiast who collected all manner of art, acquiring these particular seals at Sotheby’s in the early 1990s. Price: a): $600 (left) b): $650 (right)
