Reliquary Cross with Fine Robed Figure (St. George?)Circa 9th-11th Century AD
Description: Large bronze reliquary cross (enkolpion) with lovely portrait of a haloed figure with outstretched arms and open-palm hands, probably St. George, and long expressive face. The figure wears an ornate robe incised with hatched and geometric patterns. Attractive patina. Height: 3.75 in. (9.5 cm) Condition: Intact as shown. Remains of attachment loops at top and bottom. Reference: See Les Croix-Reliquaires Pectorales Byzantines en Bronze (Picard 2006) by Bridgette Pitarakis, #567-568 for related examples identified as St. George. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of the Boston scholar Carroll Wales, collected 1952-1970. Price: SOLD
