| New Catalogue XXVIII (Fall 2003) Mailed to Subscribers and Clients
Fragments of Time is pleased to announce the publication of Art from the Ancient World XXVIII, a full-color and authoritatively researched catalogue highlighting more than 60 provenanced ancient objects selected from our inventory. The cover piece is a fine Roman bronze standing figure of Venus Anadyomene ("Rising from the Sea") in which the goddess has her arms raised to wring the sea foam from her hair. The 6-1/2 inch statue dates to the 2nd century AD and shows the goddess in sensual contrapasto pose. The object has attractive patina and detail. "There's a fantastic assortment of quality objects in the Fall catalogue," said Fragments of Time founder John Ambrose. "It is particularly strong in fine Roman objects including a wonderful intact bronze pan -- nearly 11 inches in diameter -- sold with a bronze duck-headed ladle, and an original gold pendant cameo with the head of Medusa carved in sardonyx." Collectors of Greek and Hellenistic art will find an important thin-walled Athenian skyphos which is the name vase for the Godalming Painter, circa early 4th century BC. This is complemented by a Megarian bowl which features the signature of the potter -- a rarity in Hellenistic pottery. There is a fine selection of additional Greek pottery and terracotta sculptures. Egyptian art lovers will find a strong selection of fine scarabs from a private Texas collection dating to the 1960s-70s. In the more decorative area, a very fine wooden coffin fragment bears considerable hieroglyphic text describing an offering formula and a large, professionally mounted limestone fragment depicts a variety of neatly carved letters. Fragments of Time quarterly catalogues are consistently rated among the best in the antiquities field and are used by collectors, scholars and museums as reference works. A complimentary catalogue is available upon request for new clients by filling out our request form online or by calling (508) 359-0090. An annual subscription is just $15 in the continental US or complimentary upon first purchase or either books or antiquities.
