Fragments of Time Featured in CBS Article on Antiquities Market

On September 18, 2003, CBSMarketwatch.com carried an article dealing with the antiquities market from an investment point of view.

As one of the leading American antiquities dealers, Fragments of Time founder John Ambrose was extensively interviewed for the article, as was Max Bernheimer, vice president of the antiquities department for Christies.

Both were upbeat about the prospects for the antiquities market.

"Objects that are classically beautiful never go out of style and are always in high demand," Ambrose said.

"Most all antiquities are undervalued compared to other works of art," said Bernheimer. "Compare the price of a great piece of antiquity versus a mediocre piece of contemporary art, you'll find that by and large the antiquity is still cheaper."

What's hot right now in antiquities from an investment perspective?  Both experts offered views on undervalued areas that are definitely worth considering:

  • Greek, Hellenistic terracotta figures -- Ambrose estimates that there are "many beautiful examples on the market for less than $5,000."
  • Small scale Roman bronzes -- "Nobody can tell me why the market is soft. It's a good area to look at," Bernheimer said.
  • Roman/North African Lamps -- "Many have fascinating decorative scenes with important Christian, Coptic or Jewish religious significance," said Ambrose, who put a sub-$2,500 price tag on "many superb examples."
