Rare Roman Woodworking Plane Tool Found in York

A team of archaeologists excavating near Goodmanham in Yorkshire, England, have discovered the only known complete example of a Roman woodworking plane, according to a recent report in the Yorkshire Post.

The tool, approximately 33cm long with an ivory stock and iron base and blade, is currently undergoing conservation.  It said to be enormously important in deepening the understanding of the history and evolution of woodworking.  The plane is said to date to the 1st to 4th century AD.

Along with the plane, the excavators found other evidence of continuous Roman habitation including jewellery, animal bones, coins and pottery.  No word on when the finds are scheduled to be published.
