Pregnant Female Terracotta FigurineCirca 3rd-2nd Century BC
Description: Lovely, tender depiction of a very rare subject in Hellenistic sculpture. A young, pregnant terracotta woman modeled in fine pinkish-orange clay clutches a phallic amulet in both hands as as well as holding up her chiton to display her distended belly as if to give thanks for the child she is to give birth to. Her face is delicately rendered with etched oval-shaped eyes, a small nose and slightly parted lips. Her hair is artfully sculpted with some falling in gentle waves around her face, and pulled into a bun at the back and some arranged into a top knot. Height: 4.5 in. (11 cm) Condition: Intact. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Professor and Mrs. Sid Port, Los Angeles, CA, acquired in London in 1977.
