Coming Soon: Purple Carrots Thanks to Egyptians
Purple carrots? Yes, and they are on the way to a grocery store near
you.
Rest easy, these 'carrots of a different color' are not the by-product of
some biogenetic experiment. Rather, growers have begun to take the carrot
back to its original "roots" so to speak.
The ubiquitous orange carrot, was actually invented by the Dutch in the 16th
century. In antiquity, carrots are known in a range of colors. The
Egyptians, as we know from surviving tomb paintings and texts, enjoyed purple
carrots. Romans favored white. Carrots of yellow, black and green are also
known.
Carrot growers are expected to begin offering carrots in a range of striking
"new" colors beginning in July in an effort to encourage children to
eat more of them.
