Roman-Egyptian Hanging Lamp with Dog

Circa 2nd Century AD 

 

Description:  A charming hanging oil lamp in the form of a reclining dog, probably a Maltese.  The dog's legs are curled beneath its body with its head turned to the right.  The creature has short pointed ears, a squat muzzle and a short fluffy tail.  Textured in low relief across the body indicating short tufted fur.  A small filling hole and suspension loop on the back with the nozzle protruding from the front paws.  From the area around Alexandria.

Height:  2.25 in. (5.7 cm)

Condition:  Intact with a small hole on the underside and wear in the slip around the nozzle.

Provenance:  Formerly in the renowned Leo Mildenberg Collection of Animals in Ancient Art.
