Legion XIIII Military Brick

Circa 2nd-4th Century AD   

Description:  Fragmentary Roman military brick from Carnuntum. The final letters of the original [LE](X?)IIII G punch stamp crisply preserved in planta pedis style, i.e. inside the outline of a boot. A small label inscribed "Carnuntum b.d. Badern" applied to one edge.

Length:  4.15 in. (10.0 cm) 
Thick: 1.5 in. (2.7cm)

Condition:  Intact as shown. 

Provenance:  Ex-collection Dr. Helmut Zapfe, Austria.

Reference:  The planta pedis style is a scarce type for the 14th Legion in Carnuntum.
