Superb Enthroned Serapis Figure

Circa 2nd-3rd Century AD  

Description:  Classic portrayal in terracotta of Serapis seated on a high-backed throne with Cerberus, dog of the underworld, at his feet. His right hand rests on the dog’s head, his left raised above his shoulder. His bearded face is well delineated with crisp features, a tall modius rests on his head. He wears a short-sleeved chiton with pleats, a mantle draped over his left shoulder. Back is plain with a circular vent hole.

Height:  6.25 in. (16 cm)

Condition:   The figure is intact with nicely preserved detail.

Provenance: Formerly in a private East Coast collection.

Background:  Serapis is an incarnation of Osiris developed during the Ptolemaic reign in Alexandria. This type of statuette was extremely popular and is an ancient copy of a monumental Roman cult statue erected by Ptolemy III at the Serapeum of Alexandria.
