Finely Modeled Lamp Handle with Serapis Wearing Modius

Circa 1st-3rd Century AD    

Description:   Triangular handle ornament from lamp with molded relief of Zeus-Serapis emerging from an acanthus above a globe. The deity is detailed with curly hair, tall modius atop his head and pleated garments over his shoulders. Beneath the thumb-spur is part of the lamp’s shoulder incised with concentric lines.  From Roman Egypt.

Height (without stand):  3 in. (7.6 cm)

Condition:  Intact as shown.  Custom removable stand included.

Provenance:  Formerly in a private British collection assembled between 1940-70s.
