Fine Terracotta Bull Figure

Circa 4th Century BC

Description: This charming bull stands with head facing forward with exaggerated rounded dewlap, small muzzle and short pointed horns. Formed in two-part mould of finely grained micaceous beige clay with legs joined. From Thessaly.

Reference: The bull has always symbolizes - and still symbolizes - the resilience of indomitable vigor and innate dynamic potency, untamable independence and inexhaustible fertilizing energy. The symbol of the bull can be found in prehistoric wall paintings, the magnificent palace of Knossos, and in the artwork of all great ancient civilizations including Assyrian, Babylonian, Egyptian, Cypriot, Etruscan, Greek and Roman.
