South Italian Red-Figure Oinochoe

Circa Late 4th Century BC

Description:  Large trefoil-lipped red-figure oinochoe depicting a nude youth athlete holding a wreath and thyrsos.  The youth wears a himation draped across his elbows and a wreath around his head.  The scene is framed by a border of egg-and-dot pattern above, a wave pattern below and a single reserved line at the sides.  Set behind the youth is a palmette and phiale and before him, a shrub with berries.  Rosettes and florals in the background.  The underside of the low base ring is partially glazed in black with a wedge in reserve.

Height: 8.5 in. (21 cm)

Condition:  The vessel has a long but stable stress fissure.  Earthy encrustation on the neck and mouth.

Provenance:  Formerly a British property acquired in the 1970s.

Reference:  See Ceramica Italiota a Figure Rosse della Collezione Chini del Museo Civico di Bassano del Grappa (Rome 1979) by Giuseppe Andreassi, no. 48 for a similar chous with the same marking on the foot.
